Sonos Sets the Tone at Vienna Pilates Studio

JUNE is a collection of high-end reformer Pilates studios, located in Vienna, Austria. Following the successful launch of JUNE Parliament in 2022, business owner Julia Fodor and her business partners Nina Prödl and Sebastian Prödl found the perfect site for a second studio JUNE Townhouse in the first district of Vienna, which opened in October 2024.

Spanning two floors of a historic converted townhouse, the trendy, yet tranquil, new studio comprises five rooms and bathrooms, as well as an outdoor courtyard space. Music is a vital part of the JUNE vibe, and getting the right audio solution in place was important to ensure classes would not only sound great but also run smoothly.

Julia and her team loved the Sonos system installed in the first JUNE studio and were keen to duplicate a similar solution in the new location. Both installations were completed by PS Technik, with on-going maintenance contracts in place as a key aspect of the service they provide to clients.

The Challenge

Audio quality, ease-of-use, and aesthetics were top priorities for Julia when considering which audio solution to choose. With reformer Pilates classes running throughout the day in multiple spaces, the speakers needed to offer a flexible, reliable and high-quality audio experience. It was also important that the speakers blend seamlessly with the contemporary style of the studio.

For the instructors who run the classes, the solution also had to be simple to use and secure, so that they could easily select a playlist and start every class on time, without any technical issues or risk of visitors connecting to and interfering with the audio.

Another key consideration was the age of the townhouse, which dates from the 17th century and is protected by strict building regulations. Its solid stone walls and high ceilings meant that PS Technik couldn't work with a wired-in audio solution, for example.

The Solution

Following careful analysis of the studio and its acoustic properties, PS Technik specified a wireless Sonos solution consisting of twenty Sonos Five, six Era 100 and Sonos Architectural by Sonance Outdoor Speakers.

The Sonos Five speakers were installed primarily in the studio areas. Each Sonos Five speaker has the power to fill up to 250 square feet, so this is a great room-filling option for larger spaces. Julia chose a white finish to match the bright, modern interior design.

Stephan Pfriemer, owner of PS Technik explains, "We opted for Sonos Play Fives in the studios based on the logistics of the space. The Sonos Play Fives are installed in the corners of each studio, close to the high ceilings and positioned downwards to concentrate music towards the main workout space – it plays directly to the people."

"Our classes start when the Sonos speakers play. From the first beat, our guests are put into the right mindset for the workout ahead. The audio is exceptionally clear, you can hear every detail of the music, which is important as our playlists are carefully curated to set the tone for every single class. And no matter where you are situated the audio consistently surrounds you, so everyone in the studio enjoys the same experience," added Julia.

Sonos Era 100 speakers are installed in the lobby area and the bathrooms, while Sonos Architectural by Sonance Outdoor Speakers are used in the outdoor space.

"The Era 100 speakers project finely tuned, crisp stereo sound outwards to the left and right side, enveloping a space with rich audio while being small and discreet – making them ideal for the smaller communal spaces like the lobby and bathrooms."

The challenging acoustics of the building meant that Sonos Trueplay™ technology played a crucial role in getting the audio balance right. This software measures the acoustics of the room then instantly fine-tunes the EQ to suit the space.

Simple and Secure Audio Operation

To ensure only JUNE staff could access and control the Sonos system, Stephan set up two separate networks. The first enables instructors and staff to access the music libraries and control the audio from dedicated iPads, while the other is a guest Wi-Fi network for visitors.

"Our instructors move between studios, so the audio system needed to be consistent in every room, and simple to use…there's not much time to connect to a playlist and get started with the next class. The Sonos system is so easy and intuitive to use. Our instructors have the JUNE playlists stored on iPads – one in each studio – which means that somebody can just come in and pick up where the previous instructor has left off," explains Julia.

The Result

The Sonos system is used daily in the new studio. Staff can easily transition between playlists and run classes to a tight timetable, without any disruption. The Sonos solution works seamlessly to set the desired ambience for each step of the client journey, from reception to changing rooms and into the studio. Grouped audio provides ease of control, enabling staff to easily manage and adjust audio in any area throughout the building.
