Sonos Amp Multi streamlines multi-zone residential audio across Home Automatix smart home projects

Introduction

Having installed Sonos systems for more than two decades, Arek, systems integrator at Home Automatix, has seen the brand evolve from its earliest amplifiers into a wider ecosystem spanning wireless speakers, soundbars, architectural audio, and multi-zone amplification. When Sonos Amp Multi was released, Arek saw an opportunity to test the new multi-channel amplifier in his own Oshawa home before introducing it into two client projects. Across three residential installations, Amp Multi helped Home Automatix streamline existing Sonos systems, upgrade legacy setups, and expand outdoor audio.

Challenge

In each home, Home Automatix faced a familiar challenge: delivering reliable multi-zone sound without filling racks, closets, or cabinets with separate amplifiers.

In one high-end Toronto home, several Sonos Amps had been stacked in a closet, creating unnecessary heat, clutter, and complexity. “Although the equipment itself is beautifully designed, the homeowner didn’t want to see racks of technology,” explains Arek. “They wanted the system to work reliably in the background without taking away from the design of the home.”

A second client home in Brampton presented a different upgrade requirement. The homeowner wanted to expand an existing Sonos Amp system, bringing more zones onto the latest Sonos app.

In Arek’s own home, the goal was to improve garage and backyard coverage, distributing music more evenly outdoors.

Solution

Arek first installed Amp Multi in his own home, replacing a two-amp setup that supported audio in his garage and backyard. With additional outputs available, he expanded the outdoor system with lower-level rock speakers, distributing music more evenly across the garden while minimizing spill into neighboring properties.

The installation also highlighted some of Amp Multi’s practical installer features. When connecting the garage speakers, a red fault indicator beneath one terminal helped Arek quickly identify a wiring issue. “It told me straight away that something wasn’t right. Once the correct speaker wires were connected, the issue disappeared. Those kinds of details make setup much easier.” 

In the well-maintained Toronto property, the homeowner was already using Sonos throughout the house, including several Sonos wireless speakers and soundbars. The property also featured existing passive speakers across several wired audio zones, previously powered by multiple Sonos Amps stacked in a closet. Replacing them with Amp Multi allowed Home Automatix to streamline the installation into a single 2U unit, significantly reducing heat and clutter while preserving the familiar Sonos user experience.

“Once installed, the system connected to WiFi without issue and the zones were added quickly through the Sonos app,” recalls Arek. “The channel routing flexibility was also very useful during setup, giving us the ability to swap left and right channels in the software.”

In the newer Brampton home, the existing system used a mix of two older Sonos Amps and one newer unit to power three audio zones, but the homeowner wanted to extend audio into additional areas. Home Automatix used Amp Multi to support three independent audio zones, while retaining one older Amp for a soundbar’s rear speakers. The result was a cleaner, more streamlined system that preserved the functionality the homeowner already relied on.

Across all three installations, Amp Multi demonstrated clear advantages for integrators, reducing hardware, creating cleaner racks that run much cooler, and improving long-term access. “Each setup was incredibly smooth and only took around 15 minutes plus some testing,” confirms Arek. 

For homeowners, the experience remained familiar, with the Sonos app providing intuitive room-by-room control. The projects also demonstrated Amp Multi’s flexibility with existing passive loudspeakers, allowing Home Automatix to retain current speakers across wired audio zones.
