Sonos 27: Why Your System Keeps Getting Better

Every so often, your Sonos system gets an update. A new feature shows up. Something feels a little smoother. You don't think much about it beyond that.

Add those updates up over the years, and they've quietly turned into something bigger. There’s a real operating system running underneath every Sonos product you own. It just didn't have a name. Now it does, and it’s called Sonos 27.

So, what is Sonos 27?

Sonos 27 is the operating system behind every Sonos product. It’s the same software that's always been there, helping your speakers find each other or adjusting their sound to fit the room. It's the reason your system gets better after you bring it home – and every time you add to it.

We're giving it a name for the same reason you know the name of the software running your phone or TV. It's easier to follow what's new, and it’s easier to know when your system is capable of more than it was last year.

Parts of Sonos 27 have new names too, including Sonos Fabric. This is the system capability that lets your products find one another, understand their role in the system and coordinate automatically. You've been using it for years to stereo pair matching speakers in the same room, group rooms across your home, and set up home theatre surround sound.

What's new in Sonos 27 this fall

Four new experiences are arriving this season, the first two powered by Sonos Fabric.

Portable surrounds

Turn two compatible portable speakers into wireless rear surrounds for film night — then move them straight back to wherever they usually live when the credits roll. No wires, no permanent setup, no rearranging furniture.

If you already own a pair of Move 2 or Sonos Play speakers, portable surround sound functionality turns them into a bigger part of your home theatre the moment you need it — paired with a compatible soundbar like Arc Ultra. Portable surround sound functionality requires a matched pair, which means you need two Sonos Plays or two Move 2s. Personal listening, without missing a beat

Headphone linking, which is available in Early Access, allows you to seamlessly move audio between Sonos Ace Ultra and a compatible Sonos speaker or group streaming over the same WiFi connection with just the press of a button. You will also be able to pick and control your music on your headphones directly in the Sonos app while on your home network. For more information, read our support article here.

The new Sonos voice experience

Sonos 27voice is a new way to ask for music, built specifically for that purpose in the home, and the shortest path from wanting a song to hearing it. Instead of remembering exact commands, you can ask the way you'd talk to someone in the room with you. Say things like "Play that song I had on in the kitchen last night,” or “Put on something downstairs that the kids will like.” The system works out the rest.

Launching in Early Access later this fall in English and the US to start, Sonos 27voice is opt-in, built with privacy in mind, and designed to feel like part of the system you already chose. Sonos Voice Control remains the default experience at launch, with Sonos 27voice rolling out alongside it.

Control Sonos with the AI you already use

Sonos has always been an open platform. Sonos MCP expands it. Sonos MCP connects your system to frontier large language models (LLMs), so you can control Sonos from familiar chatbot interfaces and mix advanced dialogue and reasoning with out-loud listening on your speakers.

Any LLM that is capable of using an MCP server may connect and, once authorised by a Sonos user, control their Sonos system. This will be available to US-English users first, with a larger rollout to follow.

The staples haven't gone anywhere

Sonos 27 isn't replacing what already makes your system work. It's the reason those things keep getting better.

Getting Sonos 27

You don't have to do anything. Sonos 27 is already rolling out to your system. Keep your Sonos app updated, and the improvements arrive on their own.
